Install the New LexSortSmart App!

The Town of Lexington is pleased to announce LexSortSmart, a new mobile and web app for waste disposal and collection information.

The tool allows residents to:

  • • Get reminders and notifications about their collection schedule
    • View upcoming waste disposal events
    • Search for how to properly dispose of items
    • Schedule collection of special disposal items (coming soon!)
    • Access recycling educational resources

Think of it as your one-stop shop for trash, recycling, and composting information in Lexington!

How to Access LexSortSmart

How to Use LexSortSmart

LexSortSmart has several features that will help you get the information you need about waste collection and disposal. When you access the app for the first time, you will be asked to provide your address. This will configure the app to know your trash collection day.

Calendar

Once you provide your address, the Calendar tab will show your trash, recycling, and composting collection day, along with upcoming waste disposal events, and hours for the Hartwell Composting & Recycling Facility.

Notifications and Reminders

If you are using the mobile app, you can sign up for collection reminders and notifications from the Town.

To set up collection reminders, click the gear icon in the top right of the app and select “Collection reminders.” From there you can opt in or out of collection reminders, set how far in advance you would like the reminder, or customize your reminders. Within custom reminders, you can select which collections and events you would like reminders for.

To opt in for notifications from the Town, click the gear icon in the top right of the app and select “Notifications.” You can opt in for Emergency and/or General notifications. Emergency notifications would include only very timely information like an unexpected delay of service.

How do I Dispose Of?

The How Do I Dispose Of tab allows you to search for any item you are trying to get rid of and find local information about how to dispose of it. On the mobile app, you can even take a picture of an object to get information about how to dispose of it!

Residents may be familiar with the state’s Recyclopedia tool, which works the same way. Recyclopedia remains a very reliable source of information, but the Town encourages Lexington residents to begin using the LexSortSmart tool instead, as it has been customized with Lexington-specific disposal information.

If you come across any information you believe to be inaccurate, please report it.

Discovery Zone

The Discovery Zone has articles, quizzes, and educational resources to help you become a better recycler. Please note that the articles and educational materials in the Discovery Zone are not custom to Lexington or Massachusetts. The Misunderstood Material section does pull local information from the How Do I Dispose Of tool.

Report a Problem

Have an issue with the app? Use the Report a Problem (web app) or Help (mobile app) features to get help from the LexSortSmart technical team or from Town staff depending on the issue.

Scheduling Special Collections

Coming soon! In the coming months, you will see an additional tab added to the LexSortSmart app that will be used for scheduling collection for items that require special processing, including mattresses/box springs, large appliances/white goods, and CRTs/large electronics. Please stay tuned for additional notifications about this upcoming feature.

Languages

LexSortSmart is available in Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. To translate the app into one of these languages, follow the instructions below:

  • • In the mobile app, click the gear icon in the top right of the app and select “Change Language.”
  • • In the web app, use the language dropdown menu in the top right to select your language.
