All of Middlesex Conservation’s native plant varieties are straight species, meaning that no cultivars will be sold. It has been found that cultivars often do not have the same benefits to wildlife that straight species do. The focus on native species will help native pollinators, increase biodiversity, and conserve native plants and animals, among other benefits.
Research has shown that even the addition of a few native plants in an otherwise exotic garden can act as habitat “islands” that could be the difference between struggling and thriving for our local ecosystems. Some natives that Middlesex Conservation is providing are also great alternatives to non-native Forsythia, ornamental grasses, cultivated roses, and cultivated Clematis.
