Butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) is still recommended in garden centers as a pollinator powerhouse, despite not supporting the full life cycle of any local moths or butterflies, and the harmful impacts it can have on our ecosystems. Gardeners have fallen into the same trap with other species like tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica), and non-native lupines (Lupinus polyphyllus and hybrids). Don’t want to get fooled again? Kristen Nicholson of Blue Stem Natives is here to explain the science and dispel myths. She’ll cover the difference between eco-regions and grow zones, why and how exotic plants are designated invasive, and practical solutions for removing ecologically inert plants and replacing them with beneficial natives that will really make your garden sing!
