Bill Gette will show you an amazing variety of mid-summer wildflowers that flourish in area fields, along forest edges, in wetlands, and beside country lanes. Mid-summer is a great time to search for wildflowers. Bill hopes this presentation will encourage you to go on a wildflower walk. Bill will open his presentation by showing you examples of flower parts (e.g., axil, petiole, sepal); review flower reproductive parts; and discuss flower types. All of these characteristics are key to wildflower identification.
Bill will then provide species accounts for over 60 wildflowers, including Herb-Robert, Wild Bergamot, Indian Tobacco, Dwarf Enchanter’s Nightshade, Allegheny Monkey-flower, Arrow-leaved Tearthumb, Yellow Pine-sap, Boneset, Canada Burnet, Turtlehead, and Downy Rattlesnake-plantain. For each species, Bill will discuss the origin of its scientific name (an amazing subject in itself), traditional uses, reproduction methods, and other interesting information.
This program is made possible by the generous donors to the Cary Library Foundation.
