When we burn fossil fuels for energy to heat and cool our homes, run our vehicles, and power our electronics and appliances, we emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This adds to the blanket of heat-trapping gases that has kept our planet a perfect average temperature for life as we have known it. As this blanket thickens, excess heat is trapped, warming the earth and the oceans. If we don’t work together to halt this process, the planet we leave our children will be hotter, with more violent weather, many fewer species, and disrupted natural systems.
