SUMMARY:Massachusetts Horticulture Society Webinar: Style and Purpose in th
e Native Garden: Using Cues to Care $28 Fee
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE FOR $28\n\nTo those unfamiliar with ecological la
ndscaping\, native plant gardens can sometimes appear “messy". Seed head
s\, standing stems\, and irregular plant groupings—while ecologically va
luable—may not always communicate “intentional design” to those pass
ing by.\n\nThis lecture explores the concept of cues to care—the design
strategies that signal purpose\, stewardship\, and thoughtfulness in natu
ralistic gardens. The idea was popularized in the 1990s by landscape archi
tect Joan Nassauer\, who studied how people perceive ecological landscapes
. We will examine how small interventions\, such as defined edges\, plant
layering\, and well-placed focal points\, can transform a native garden fr
om appearing “wild” to being read as intentional and artful.
